INDIA RIVERS AND THEIR TRIBUTARIES

 

  • These rivers have small catchment basins and small areas .
  • these have less erosional activity because of less graded valley
  • receives water from monsoon rainfall and they flow in rainy seasons .they are seasonal rivers
  • they flow through oldest plateaus of world having hard rock surface of non-alluvial character forcing them to flow in straight course . so they attained maturity fast.
  • Narmada and Tapti rivers make estuaries whereas Godavari and Cauvery big rivers form delta.

classification of Peninsular Rivers

they are classified into three drainage systems:

1.towards the ganga

  • these rivers rise in the VINDHYA RANGE  and join the YAMUNA or GANGA

Examples are : Chambal ,Betwa , Sind ,Son ,Ken.

2.towards the Arabian Sea

  •   flowing westwards between Vindhya and the Satpura range and flow into Arabian Sea examples are: Narmada and Tapti .they make estuaries

3.towards the bay of bengal

  •      rise in Western ghats and flow into bay of bengal .
  • examples are :Mahanadi ,Godavari , Krishna and Kaveri.
